We’ve reached the edge and edges are choice points. An edge is the outside limit where something begins or ends. Some are real. Some are imagined. Some are self-imposed. This year-end transition point is an edge. What will the new year bring? It will definitely bring change. In times of change it helps to pause, breathe, and focus on what we control and what we don’t.
We are always at the edge and we are always at a choice point. In every moment we face three choices – stay still, go backward, or go forward. Choices one and two keep us in our comfort zone behind the limits we impose on ourselves. Choices one and two represent a commitment to the usual and ordinary, a retreat into the status quo. Choice three, to go forward, is a push past the limit and a step past the edge. Choice three is an option to go beyond usual and ordinary, to have an ultra experience.
Your 2017 will be defined by your choices. What will 2017 look like if you stay safely away from your edge? What will it look like if you go to your edge and push past the limits and make something new begin? We know the answers to these questions already. Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” He also said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” May 2017 be all you hope for. May you keep moving forward, opening new doors, doing new things, staying curious and walking new paths.
A Personal Manifesto for 2017
Each year at this time I consider what I hope to make real in the coming new year. I think in terms of not just resolutions or results, but also the experience I want to have throughout the year. I frame my reflection around a two simple questions:
- Next New Year’s Eve, what do I want to celebrate?
- For what would I be extremely grateful?
Imagine it’s December 31st, 2017. What are you grateful for? Remember, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
