9 Rules for Life (and Leadership)

We all want to get the most out of life. We all want to achieve great things. We all want to be known as strong leaders. I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news. First, the good news. Here are nine simple rules that lead to a productive and fulfilling life. Now, the bad news. These nine rules are also challenging. It will take a daily commitment to remember and practice these simple, yet challenging rules. There are no short-cuts. To see the view from the top of the hill, you’ve got to make the climb.

Oh, by the way, the first eight rules are multipliers. Start at #1 and work your way through the list. If you break a rule, it will impact your ability to master the next. Go back and practice some more.

Rule # 1 – Trust is the foundation. Be trustworthy. Trust yourself. Find people you trust. Without trust, there is no hope. Without hope, we cannot move forward. With hope, we can achieve anything.

Rule # 2 – Own your reality. Stand on your own two feet. To do this takes a strong will. Doing so will strengthen your will at the same time. Know what you want and drive toward it. Leadership places you in a victim-free zone.

Rule #3 – Go to the edge and push farther. Take some risks. If you don’t try, you’ll never know. Show initiative. Find your purpose.

Rule #4 – Play to your strengths. Find out what you’re good at and what you love and do that. No matter what anyone says.

Rule #5 – Be true to yourself. Come up with a consistent answer to the question, “Who am I?” and stick to it, regardless of what others may want or who they want you to be. At some point we have to change our friends to match our principles instead of the other way around.

Rule #6 – Love. Remember, you get what you give. John and Paul are right, “The love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Rule #7 – Give a damn. Care about people and things beyond your own concern. Let as many people into your circle as you can.

Rule #8 – Show some integrity. Bring all of who you are to everything. This is what integrity is. This is the beginning and end of wisdom.

Rule #9 – Don’t f@%# around. Don’t waste time. It runs out faster than you think. No one hands life to you. We don’t find meaning; we create it. You have to make it what you want it to be and the clock is ticking.
