Meeting each moment is as easy as A, A, A.

The philosopher Martin Buber said, All real living is meeting. All leading is meeting as well. Meeting the moment. Meeting the person. Leadership is about bringing our best response to each moment and to each encounter with another person. Its about thinking more carefully, feeling more fully, and communicating more effectively. In order to create a positive business result or develop a persons or teams capacity to contribute.

We designed our A3 model (Aim, Align, Act) to aid leaders in meeting each moment, each challenge and opportunity, and each person they engage in order to create alignment, build individual capacity and bench strength, and coordinate action.

The A3 Model helps leaders remember that they have a choice to make in each moment that can take them and their team and organization beyond usual and ordinary. Using the A3 Model, we remind ourselves and encourage others to think more carefully, to feel more fully, and to communicate more effectively. It helps us examine and answer the question, How can we get people to engage and contribute so we can create the business results we envision?

Step One of A3 AIM is an experience of observing where we want to go and where we are. When we take time to aim, we invite inquiry and suspend our pre-conceived notions. At step two of A3 we question assumptions, explore options, consider the implications of different courses of action and ALIGN around an agreed way forward. Step Three of the A3 model ACT completes our thought process by focusing on what we will do and why. By using the A3 model, we create a strategy and its underlying purpose. That strategic alignment enables us to move swiftly and with confidence as we begin to execute our plans.

A3 questions:

  • What is the best possible outcome?
  • What are your options?
  • How does each option get you closer to your best possible outcome?
  • What will you do and why?
  • What is the best, next step?
